Re installing a 2nd H.D.D. in the MAC 8500, being SCSI, and not dealing with pc style master/slave considerations, you probably need to change the scsi id jumper/s. This is exactly why I am visiting this site to find the info for myself. But try finding the exact Quantum model that Apple used and marked as a "250Mb"H.D.D.! This may be the formatted size in actual Mbs counting 1024000 bytes to the MEGA- part of Mb, instead of just one million! I did assume that similar models from the same manufacturer may utilise the same printed circuit board and this site ( thetechpage.com ) gives the SCSI ID combinations from the pin designations on the pcb using the ubiquituous jumpers. You will also have to determine your requirements with the Fireball. If you can temporarily disable your main H.D.D. and boot from the Fireball, assuming it has a system folder, or if not, from a CD-ROM or whatever with one - holding down key C - THEN you may find it starts up, because it's probably set to scsi "0" (zero). This is the default setting, and will need to be changed to "1", or another un-used scsi number, so as not to conflict with the main start-up H.D.D. when you get it all back together again. Have a happy Mac experience in the New Year!!! Ivan.
