Hi
I am a novice at hardware and techy stuff and would like to ask a question of more experienced people.
I have an old PII 233MHz with 32Mb RAM running an OEM version of windows95
I have recently installed a new network card when I signed up for cable Internet connection. For some reason this required me to reinstall windows, as I was getting consistent messages to insert the windows CD every time I tried to add any networking components.
I now have problems in a: getting my 3Gb Fujitsu hard drive to run without the MS-Dos compatibility mode message, b: getting my 8Gb Fujitsu hard drive to be seen by windows (although the BIOS sees it) and c: getting my CD drive to be seen by windows.
The 3Gb drive has two partitions, the first (2Gb) being known as C: and the second (1Gb) D:
The other drive, which was added plug and play from another PC has a single 8Gb partition. When it was working, it was assigned to D: and the original 1Gb partition of the other drive became E:
I suspect that the whole problem may be caused by the fact that I had been running a disk utility called Superfasst98 before I reinstalled windows. I was also running a utility called webcelerator, but I dont (for some reason) suspect this, as it seemed basically to offer a local caching facility for Internet files.
I have tried removing the NOIDE key and any BAD_IDE keys from the registry and rebooting, to no avail. My Bootlog.txt shows that esdi_506.pdr is failing to load three times (once each for the two hard drives and once for the CD?)
The symptoms are:
In the device manager tab of system properties from control panel, under the Hard disk controllers, I have 4 entries:
The Standard Dual PCI IDE Controller looks fine
The remaining three,
Primary IDE controller (single fifo)
Secondary IDE controller (single fifo)
Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller
All have yellow circles with black explanation points in them.
Any pointers, or further recommendations for investigation would be greatly appreciated.
John
