You could set the ID with jumpers on the drive and not use the switch on the case at all, but you would not be able to change the ID without opening the case. The 6-prong connector for the switch is probably intended to go over the same pins that would be used for installing ID jumpers on the drive, so it should work with lots of different models. Sometimes the contacts can be removed from the connector body and pushed onto the pins if they have a different layout.
