WD disk problems

Two weeks ago I bought an EIDE WD400BB disk (40GB/7200rpm).
I installed it as master and its slave is my old Western Digital 10GB/5400rpm disk. I have two problems:
1. During its operation I hear loud clicks (like the on/off of a switch). They are not only annoying, but I'm not sure that the disk is OK and won't die soon. WD-techies think that the boot sector may be corrupted and suggested a low level format, but it boots smoothly and the OS loads OK.
Did anyone else hear of that "clicking" problem?

2. Once in a while it simply stalls and the screen frezes for a couple of seconds.
Might there be a problem with the master/slave setup (with the slower disk as a slave)?
Or maybe because it's ATA-100 and I'm running it on a ATA-66 board (Intel-Seattle)?

Any help is more than welcome, thanks.
