Hi,

I bought a Compaq 18.2 gig SCSI hard drive model no. HC0183172A, as well as an adapter to convert the connection to attach it to my IDC 50 pin SCSI card (SIIG AP-10) and cable. I am running windows 98SE.

However I am having considerable problems making it work. As it came with no manual can you please help!

This is what happened:

1. Connected the adapter to back of drive, plugged in power cord and SCSI cable from card into it and fitted a supplied jumper for SCSI ID#1.

2. Turned on power. SCSI utility detected Drive make and model but hung for a minute before saying 'DRIVE NOT READY' . New hard drive remained silent and still.

3. Continued to load windows getting to the 'MODE select code page function completed' line when new hard drive started spinning up but the whole system hung indefinately.

4. Pressed RESET button on front of computer.

5. The new hard drive continued to spin. This time the SCSI utility detected the drive and added 'SCSI ID#2 - Drive D (81h)', without hanging (despite setting jumper for ID#1).

6. Windows gets to 'SAFE MODE' prompt, chose 'NORMAL', continued to load windows normally with no problems.

7. In control panel\system\device manager the new hard drive comes up and is described as 'working normally' but has not been assigned a drive letter nor does it show up in Windows Explorer or My Computer and therefore I HAVE NO ACCESS TO IT!

8. If I shut down and restart I have to go through the whole process from number 2 above again with no change. The new hard drive only spins down when the computer is turned off, once it has started, and even after just a few minutes seems to get pretty hot...

I have tried different ID# settings, both with the jumper on the adapter and on the new hard drive itself, but no change (except for ID number) - there are no other devices on the card at present anyway.

I have tried assigning a drive letter (successfully), but when I try to access the drive, windows says 'DRIVE NOT READY' although it does click once as if it is trying.

Is there anything I need to change on the new hard drive jumpers? I am trying to use them as supplied. I can see no termination jumpers or switches to enable termination - could this be the problem? Why doesn't the unit spin up immediately when turning on the power so it gets recognised first time? What's going on?!? AAAAAAAAARRGH!!!!!!!!!

PLEASE HELP!!!
