Using Partition Magic in place of Drive copy worked like a champ. I wasn't sure if Drivecopy proactively did something that partition magic didn't. Nope. The partition copy function did the job.

: Jim - sounds like you've done this before!! I am also in the process of installing / swapping hard drives. Do you see any problem with using Partition Magic to copy the partitions from master to slave instead of formatting the slave as one large 20GB drive. I will also be dual booting W2k post drive swap and would like to make room for it. I've got the new partition map all worked out - I just want to be sure my machine will boot after I swap the drives (I really don't want to restore my backups if I don't have to)? Thanks in advance.

: : The steps are as follows.

: : configure your old hd as a master (check the jumpers)
: : configure your new hd as a slave (set the jumpers)
: : boot the system and go into bios
: : set the 2nd drive to auto detect
: : exit and reboot the system
: : fdisk the new drive into 1 large 20GB partition
: : (will require FAT32)
: : format the new drive with the /s parameter from DOS
: : or in Win 9X choose to copy a system files.
: : (these previous steps prevent some imaging software
: : from partition drives or using a screwy disk layout
: : scheme)
: : run your copying software (betcha it's Norton Ghost)
: : follow the prompts to copy the master to the slave
: : without reformatting
: : shutdown the system
: : pull both hard drives and the IDE cable (save the cable)
: : change the jumpers so the new hd is the master and
: : the old hd is now a slave
: : install the new IDE cable that came with the hd
: : (it is an ATA-66 or ATA-100 cable) make sure
: : the blue connector is connected to the motherboard
: : place the hd's back and cable
: : boot and go into BIOS
: : set both of the hd to auto detect
: : reboot and enjoy.

: : : Here's what you can try: if your software copy can create exact image of an HD then use it to copy the old HD to the New HD.

: : : After that done, set your new HD as the Master Drive, and set your old HD as the slave Drive (jumper settings on both HDs), connect your new HD on the Master Cable and leave the old HD out.

: : : Boot up your computer and set your BIOs to indicate the new HD drive as the first boot drive, reboot. If your computer boots with your new HD that means you got all your old HD data plus the OS. Then you can connect your old HD as a slave drive, reformat it to free up space.

: : : These all depense on what your "software copy to copy HD" can really do.

: : : : Need advice please! I have a G6-333 Gateway with 8.4 gig hd. It is full. I bought a Western Digital 20 gig ultra ata/100 7200rpm, and would like to install. How can I have 2 hard drives and make the faster WD one the primary without losing all my existing data, and make the best use out of two hard drives? What is easiest and safest way to upgrade? (it comes with software copy to copy HD as well?) I appreciate any help you can give me. THANKS~! Judy
