SOUNDS LIKE THE BATTERY WENT BAD CAUSING COMPUTER TO LOOSE CMOS SETTINGS,,TO FIX IT REPLACE BATTERY
AND GO INTO CMOS AND RESTET THE CORRECT HARD
DRIVE SETTINGS,,MANY COMPUTERS STARTING WITH THE 486 ERA FLASH ON THE SCREEN WHEN BOOTING UP HOW TO ENTER CMOS USUALLY BY HITTING DELETE,,F1,,F 10,,
OR ESCAPE,,FROM CMOS SET UP LOOK FOR OPTION TO DETECT HARD DRIVE,,THEN LOOK FOR OPTION TO SAVE AND EXIT,,YOU CAN DO THIS EVEN IF BATTER IS BAD
TO GET THE COMPUTER RUNNING,,HOEVER WHEN TURND OFF
IT LOOSES SETTINGS AGAIN AND YOU HAVE TO REPEATE THE SET UP TO GET BACK IT,,THE BATTERY THATS BAD IS NOT THE COMPUTER BATTERY IT'S THE CMOS BATTERY ON THE MOTHER BOARD

: I have this Halikan Chaplet 486 Laptop and when I turn it on...it says Real Time Clock Error...then I press f2 and it says is loads the defaults for the checksums and such and says the fixed drive has failed initialization and that the CMOS time and day are invalid....so I go and fix the time and then save the results and reboot....then it says Diskette Read Failure press f1 to retry or f2 for setup....can anyone help me? I know the CMOS battery is going dead or is dead, but i would love to get this old thing running again.
