If you want to reformat using Fdisk, you will have
to reload your software and OS again.
I always like
to make sure that I have a boot disk on hand when
I'm doing any kind of formatting.
Also, Make sure you have a backup of all your
important data.
Your hardware should not be a problem. Just make
sure that if you manually loaded any drivers, that
you have a copy of them on disk.

*When you use Fdisk, make sure that you have the
correct settings in your BIOS for your drive. Ex:
If your hard drive is 20GB and your BIOS setting
is defined as 20MB, your Fdisk and Format.com will
only setup your drive for 20MB of formatted space!
It happened to me one time! (embarrassing!)

*Fdisk will ask you to enable large disk support,
say yes, this will enable you to have only one
primary partition. Once you have your primary
partition, you can format it with the Format command.

*You also may choose to use a third party program
called Partition Magic by Power Quest, with out
the loss of any data. I still recommend having a
good backup of your data just in case! Part. Mag.
works alot faster than the traditional Fdisk and
Format commands.

I hope I've given you an idea of what you can research
on. It will be a nice learning exp. Good Luck!
